How long is the program?
It's a 4-week program. There's two sessions: one in July and one in August. (You can see the dates below in the registration form).
What topics do you cover?
Unit 1 (Kinematics) which includes
Kinematic equations
Free Fall and 1-D Motion
Relative Motion
Vector Decomposition
Projectile Motion and 2-D Motion
I feel it's best students get a solid foundation in the first unit (Unit 1: kinematics), especially if this is their first physics class. There are programs out there that try to cover the entire course in 2 months. I know many students who tried those programs and came back to me for help because it was too fast and they didn't really learn it well. It's already a hard course to do in a whole year, so most students won't do well in trying to learn all of it over a short time.
What about the other units?
We do teach and have support for the entire AP Physics 1 curriculum. Options for those units are provided after the first 4 week session.
I do this because I want students to actually ensure they like learning this way, and feel confident in the support (I know they will love it, but I want them to experience it before looking ahead to future units).
How many hours a week of work is needed?
It can vary based on how quickly a student picks up the material, but about 3 hours per week is the average. That's broken down into
2 Hours of Classes per Week
1 Hour of Homework per Week
There's actual extra support classes if students are struggling a bit more, so it can be more hours/classes per week.
We want students do learn that doing a little work each week will go much farther than trying to cram a bunch of work into a short time. Speaking as someone who did Electrical Engineering at Berkeley and Stanford, cramming is not the way to be successful in those programs with hard classes.
How do the classes work?
It's a hybrid program that has a mix of recorded lessons (see the demo below), but also several live classes.
The biggest part of the live classes is for students to focus on how to break down and solve problems. There's two types of live sessions that will happen:
1) Lectures - these are large group classes where the instructor will lead them through several example problems and how to go about using the problem solving steps. Students can ask questions in a safe space (they can ask questions directly to the instructor).
2) Help Sessions - these are small group classes (max of 5 students) where students work through problems and get help or guidance from the instructor if needed. It's kept intentionally small so students can get help as they're working through problems.
When are the class times?
You can see the available class times in the registration below. I will guarantee at least one time slot will align with their availability, and almost everyone will have two class times that they can make.
If I sign up, can I change the session date or class times?
Yes!
I know summer plans and things change, so students can definitely switch sessions or classes.
Even if there's a vacation in there, I've had some students do 2 weeks in July and 2 weeks in August, so it's flexible how the 4 weeks work.
Are there any refunds offered?
Yes. You can cancel and get a refund anytime before classes begin.
There is a $15 non-refundable fee though for processing and credit card fees.
Do you offer any demo lessons?
No we don't offer any demo lessons because the support and pieces are varied.
But you can take a look at the recorded lessons here that we start out with. This should give you a sense of the style of teaching and how we will work on the core foundational skills.
